Jungfrau

I went to Switzerland in 2010 Summer and 2014 Winter.   Summer is the best time for Switzerland if you are going for nature and hiking.  I stayed in the town of Grindlewald which has easy access to Jungfrau.  Grindlewald is a small town and there are many hotels around the station and I did not have to walk long distance at all.  From Grindlewald,  you can do hiking and take train to Jungfraujoch.     The railway ticket is very expensive like US $200 around trip. Do not lose your ticket.  The final stop of the station is Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, the highest railway station in Europe and is located 3,400 metres above sea level.

Once I got out the station, there were a few attraction to go. One of them is the Ice Palace, where you can see different sculpture in ice.  The whole palace is ice, even the walkway inside the palace.  Wear shoe that is slip resistant or get a ice spike wrap which can wrap on your shoe to walk on ice.  I highly recommend that when you goto Switzerland even in summer.

After the palace, I went out to the observatory and get out to the Terrace and get the view of the glacier and view of Moch, and Eiger.  Even it was in summer, the snow never melt on he top and it was very cold on top, like 0 C degree.   Bring a down or coat absolutely even in summer.  Don’t forget the spike warp on your shoe as it is very slippery outside, full of snow.

After I spent my time in the palace and the Terrace and done my shopping and hot chocolate, I took the train down to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can do hiking from there.  There are many trails you can do.  I took the one that took about approx 3 hours which is from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen and took the Wengernalp Railway back to Grindlewald.   On the trial I can see marmot, the cute animal which lives in the Alps.  And you can see many cows wandering in the mountain.  You can touch them and they won’t kick you back.  I touched them during hiking but they are not so soft, in fact quite rough.  The cows are very relaxed and enjoying under the sun.

From Grindlewald, you can walk to the cableway station and took the cablecar to “First”, the summit station where you can enjoy a great view of the snow mountain and have a nice meal at the restaurant on top.  You will enjoy it.  I did enjoy the 25 min ride and the food on top.  From First, you can do hiking also.

About Ryan

Just like most of the majority of people, I have about 4 weeks of vacations per year from my full time IT engineer job that limit my travel plan. If possible, I visit about 1-3 countries on average every year depending on how much time available and how much I want to see. I enjoy spending time in nature more than in the city but of course I want to see the city once at least if I go. So far I have visited about 20 countries and hopefully someday I can make travel as my career. No Travel No life !! I just start blogging to share my travel experience in the past years and before my memory is faded.
