Interlaken / Schilthorn

In Winter of 2014, I visited Interlaken.  It was a nice quite town to me in my impression.   I stayed near the Interlaken Ost station, at the Hotel Toscana, which was very clean and budget and not too far from the station.  It might take about 10 minutes by walk to the station.   I had the 3 countries Europe Rail Pass which covered Switzerland, and I could use it on Switzerland railway and got discount on some scenic train/boat or private railway.

Interlaken was a quiet relaxing town, the main street once you get out from Interlaken Ost will take you all the way to the next station Interlaken West, not too far away, may be 30 min or so. There were many shops and restaurant along the main street.  As usual, all shops closed around 6 pm except restaurants.   Again, Switzerland is a very expensive country. We ate at the chinese restaurant there, and ordered 2 rice plate and tea and it costed us $80 for 2 persons.  It only costed $20 in China town in San Francisco.  For 2 persons, expect to spend about US$100 if you want to sit down in a restaurant like cheese fondue, etc.

In Interlaken, there are 2 lakes, one called Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.  In Winter, only Lake Thun cruise was available.  Lake Brienz was closed in winter.    I took the cruise tour from Interlaken Ost station, very easy to access, just next to the train station. The boat starts from there.  The Rail pass covered that as well for free.  The cruise was about 2-3 hours and stopped at many small towns along the lake.  We stayed until the final stop Thun, and took the train back to Interlaken, which was less than 1 hour away.   The train is SBB ( Switzerland Railway ) so the rail pass also covered that as well.  The trip was free, so if you plan to travel in Switzerland lot, get the rail pass.

The next day I went to Schilthorn, Piz Gloria, another famous mountain resort comparable to Jungfrau.   From the top, about 3000 meter in height, I   enjoyed a great view in the Observatory for Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau and have a nice meal at the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant while enjoying the magnificent view.  From Interlaken, we took the train to  Lauterbrunnen, then took the cable car to Murren and then took another cable aerial way to Schilthorn observatory deck.  The James movie,  On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, was shot there too.  There is a Bond 007 interactive room for you to experience there in the observatory.  The view is magnificent from the top.

I revisited Grindlewald, Jungfrau in winter from Interlaken Ost.  It wasn’t that far to go there.  In winter, it is a different view than in summer.  Most people came for winter sport like ski and snow hiking.   Everywhere was covered with snow in Grindlewald, Jungfrau and Kleine Scheidegg.  Places where you can access to summer became hard to access in winter.

About Ryan

Just like most of the majority of people, I have about 4 weeks of vacations per year from my full time IT engineer job that limit my travel plan. If possible, I visit about 1-3 countries on average every year depending on how much time available and how much I want to see. I enjoy spending time in nature more than in the city but of course I want to see the city once at least if I go. So far I have visited about 20 countries and hopefully someday I can make travel as my career. No Travel No life !! I just start blogging to share my travel experience in the past years and before my memory is faded.
